  	WEIR Walter Thomas No 1176, Private, 2nd Division Cavalary, Single. Christchurch, Busdriver, NOK: 30 Montrose St, Sydneham, Mrs S Weir (Mother) Wattie left with the first echelon as a trooper in the Div Cav, B Squadron for Egypt. He served in Middle East, Greece, Crete and North Africa and was twice wounded. First 23 May 1941 and the second being on the 24 October 1942 at El Alamein. This resulted in him being sent home as medically unfit on the 12 April 1943 (shell wound right thigh). Was discharged 18 Nov 1943. Before being wounded he had reached the rank of Sgt and was in No 2 troop where they were in Stuart tanks. It is believed his was hit which is were he obtained his wounds. Wattie was mentioned in despatches and awarded the DCM in Crete, MID (Oak Leaf Emblem), Africia Star, 8th Army Clasp, Defence Medal, War Medal 39-45, NZWS Medal. Supplement to the London Gazette, 4 Nov 1941 Page 6358 The Distinguished Conduct Medal. No 1176 Corporal Walter Thomas Weir, New Zealand Military Forces. FOR CONSPICUOUS GALLANTRY: At Galatos on the 22 May 41 the Div Cav was defending the village occupying a defensive line along the western boundary of the village. A determined attack was made on that date by the enemy and the right flank was thrown back exposing the village. This was caused by the enemy gaining high ground on our right flank and enfilading our positions. Cpl WEIR covered the withdrawal with a captured enmy MAXIM gun which he had aquainted himself with. This was done at great personal risk. In additon to covering the troops with-drawing his action gave our troops time to organise and subsequently launch a counter attack which resulted in re-capturing our original posns. Cpl WEIR later instructed others in the use of MAXIM guns which was invaluable. During the whole CRETE CAMPAIGN his devotion to duty and example and initiative were outstanding an inspiring to others. Written by Maj JT Russell, OC B Sqn & Lt Col HG Carruth, Co Div Cav Regt.
