Obituary |
7 Jun 1918 |
"Otago Daily Times", New Zealand [30] |
- OBITUARY
One of the oldest pioneer settlers of Mount Cargill, Mr John Kemp, passed away last Tuesday, and was buried yesterday in the Waitati Cemetery. Mr Kemp was born at Sandwich, Kent, 88 years ago. On arrival in the colony he was attracted by the gold rush at the Dunstan diggings, but eventually he took up land in the Blueskin district, where he resided almost up to the time of his death. He encountered many of the hardships which fell to the lot of the pioneers. He was predeceased by his wife some 12 months ago, and leaves three sons and four daughters, together with a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to mourn their loss.

Research Note |
- General Note:
Came from County Kent in England where his family had been Pork Butchers.
He went to sea and was shipwrecked 3 times in sailing ships, including the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) and the Goodwin Sands off Dover.
Became a Bullock driver in South Australia and was noted for his "Colourful Language".
John later worked on the Dredge 222 in the Otago Harbour and made a trip to Australia and back on this vessel.
Close neighbours were the Lang and Ireland families.
John Kemp worked his farm, also as a bushman, felling manuka and on the Dredge 222. Manuka firewood was carted by dray to Dunedin, via Bethunes Gully Road and the farm was used to fatten bullocks for the market. These were driven to Burnside, via Bethunes gully.
