- A melancholy case of suicide occurred at Leamington early on Monday, when a single woman, named Edith Burbidge, aged 36, who took in lodgers at 10 Court Street, committed self destruction by drowning herself in a well in the back yard.
An inquest was held by Mr D R Wynter at the Old Town Hall, on Tuesday morning.
Mr John Lewis was foreman of the jury - Hannah Percox, wife of Charles Percox, waggoner, of Tachbrook, and sister of the deceased, said the latter was 31 years of age and unmarried. She had not seen her since last December, but knew she was at times very depressed.
May Sigley, Wife of Abraham Sigley, builder, Leek, in Staffordshire, said she had lodged with the deceased. She last saw her alive at half-past 10 on Sunday night, and she then spoke very rationally. At four oçlock in the morning, witness heard a scraping and a gurgling noise in the yard, which was overlooked from her window. She looked out, but saw nothing, and went back to bed again.
etc.
The jury was asked to decide whether they thought the woman accidently fell into the well, or whether she purposely drowned herself.
The jury returned a verdict of "Suicide while temporily insane".
