- Mr J M Nichol
Recognised throughtout Otago as a sheep farming authority, Mr James Miller Nichol, died at his home in Waikouaiti last week. He was in his eightieth year.
Mr Nichol was born and educated in Branxholm Braes, Hawick Scotland, and having worked on his father's farm as a shepherd, came to New Zealand in 1900. From Timaru he went to Central Otago and was a shepherd in the Nevis district from 1901 to 1905, when he returned to Scotland.
On coming back to New Zealand early in 1907 he worked as head shepherd on the Kawarau station and later on the Gladbrooke station, Middlemarch. A horse accident at the later station prevented him from taking part in sport, but in 1913 he moved to Waikouaiti. there he managed the Kia Toa station until his retirement in 1946. He married Helen Sanderson of Flag Swamp in 1915.
He served terms as president of the Waikouaiti Racing Club and of the Waikouaiti A & P Society, and became a respected judge of sheep, particularly fine woolled types, from Timaru to Invercargill.
Mr Nichol founded the Palmerston-Waihemo Scottish Society and the Waikouaiti Highland Pipe Band, and was also a founder member of the Masonic Lodge at Karitane.
His interest extended to gun club activities, and even after his retirement he was sought after for advice concerning sheep. A major operation last year curtailed most of his interests.
He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
