  	BOARDING HOUSE FIRE WOMAN BADLY BURNED MAN ESCAPES DOWN LADDER "A large wooden residence, No 34 Tennyson Street, used as a boarding house, was badly damaged by fire last night. The blaze was not of long duration, but while it lasted it was the most spectacular fire in Dunedin for some time and was visible from many parts of the city. The proprietress of the boarding house, Mrs Helen Scott, received serious burns about the arms, body and head, and was removed to the Public Hospital. Her son, Leslie, aged 17, was also taken to the Hospital with burns to his hands. A war pensioner, Mr J Dillon, was able to escape from the burning building when a neighbour placed a ladder at the back of the house. There were two or three other occupants of the house present when the fire was discovered, but they did not have time to remove any of their belongings." The Fire Brigade had received numerous calls around 9.15pm and the fire was out by 10pm, but a large part of the back part of the house, which was three storeys, was badly damaged. It was thought the fire had started in the kitchen, and assumed that Mrs Scott and her son met with their injuries in a vain effort to cope with the fire in its early stages, but the fire spread very rapidly. Family have said that Nellie was very badly burnt and spent 3/6mths in Hospital and used to have to use lots and lots of Lanolin afterwards. Leslie also had his hands burnt and he also saved his sister Gretta
