Research Note |
- William and Helen remain a bit of a mystery as I cannot locate the correct or identify the correct burial records regarding them. I have looked in areas of Midlothian, Roxburghshire and Selkirk.
According to the 1855 death certificate of their daughter Mary Dalgleish, both parents were deceased by this date.
Helen may be the one living at Newmill, Hawick in the 1841 Census. She is listed as being aged 80 which means her age could be between 80 - 84 making birth between 1757 - 1761, and of being born in the Hawick County. This would coincide with her details of being of the Hawick parish when she married in 1785.
She is also listed with a Janet, aged 65 (1772 - 1776) and an Elizabeth aged 25.
There are 3 baptisms recorded in Edinburgh that may or may not be the children of our William Miller and Helen Douglas.
I have all 3 baptism records.
Alexander born 9 Jan 1786
Andrew born 24 March 1788
John born 7 Oct 1792
In all cases, it states that William Millar, a Causeway Layer and Helen Douglas his spouse, in Old Gray Friars Parish.
It is the above two parts that have caused my doubt regarding these children.
As the death certificates of all the known children have William Miller being recorded as a Weaver of some sort, I find it difficult to consider a person of this occupation to also being a Causeway Layer.
Also I would have expected the parish to be of Cavers, even though they were living in Old Greyfriers Parish at the time.
I have not dismissed these births as belonging to William and Helen but would like to find more evidence that William and Helen were in Edinburgh during this time period.
Did William go there looking for work and then return back to Roxburghshire where they had further children. The occupation difference is very questionable.
One other thing to keep in mind, was the date of births of the children.
William and Helen were married 8 Dec 1785.
The birth of Alexander is stated to be 9 Jan 1786 in Edinburgh - this is only 1 month after the marriage - nothing unusual.
But their daughter Helen is also indicated that she was born in 1786 and that she was born in the parish of Cavers Roxburghshire.
This would make it difficult having two births in the same year or even one in 1787 but in two different places. One in Edinburgh and the other in Roxburghshire.
I am also questioning at this stage though again not dismissed - that some family trees on Ancestry have William Miller's parents listed as James Miller and Mary Cairns and that his birth was 6 Nov 1754, Edinburgh Midlothian.
The majority of these trees do not hold source information on where they obtained their details. I do hold the baptism for this William and it states that James Millar was a Glover Journeyman in South East Edinburgh.
I am in possession of a Birthday Book written by William Miller's Granddaughter. In this book it gives the birth date of her father James Miller, her Grandfather William Miller and her Great Grandfather James Miller.
All dates in this book have proved to be correct regarding other family members.
